I loved the sisterly tenderness of Benjamin West‘s Fidelia and Speranza, but armed with modern pigments, I wanted to capture a more fantastical side, with swords and gowns one might see at a present-day renaissance fair.

After studying this painting, Personification of Fidelity (circa 1600), by Domenico Tintoretto, I knew I wanted to “finish” it myself. I reimagined the piece as a marker illustration, breathing a new modern life into the aged colors, over 400 years later.
